How to Factory Reset Your PlayStation 4 Console

Factory resetting your PlayStation 4 can help solve technical issues or prepare your console for sale by wiping all your data and restoring the system to its original state. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it.

Back Up Your Data

Before proceeding with a factory reset, it's essential to back up any data you wish to keep, such as game saves, screenshots, and video clips. You can upload your data to the cloud if you have a PlayStation Plus membership or copy it to a USB storage device.

  1. To Upload Data to the Cloud:

  • Navigate to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage.

  • Choose "Upload to Online Storage."

  • Select the game data you want to upload and confirm.

  1. To Copy Data to a USB Storage Device:

  • Connect a USB storage device to your PS4.

  • Go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage.

  • Choose "Copy to USB Storage Device."

  • Select the data you want to copy and confirm.

Initiating the Factory Reset

There are two ways to factory reset your PS4: through the console's settings menu or in Safe Mode. It's recommended to try the settings menu method first.

  1. Via the Settings Menu:

  • Navigate to Settings > Initialization.

  • Select "Initialize PS4."

  • Choose "Full" to perform a complete factory reset. The "Quick" option is faster but less secure.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

  1. Via Safe Mode:

  • If your PS4 is not starting correctly, you can try resetting it via Safe Mode.

  • First, turn off your PS4 by pressing the power button on the front panel.

  • Once the system is off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after you've heard the second beep: one when you first press, and another 7 seconds later.

  • Connect the DualShock 4 controller with a USB cable and press the PS button on the controller.

  • In Safe Mode, choose "Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)."

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the factory reset.

Reinstalling System Software

If you chose to initialize your PS4 in Safe Mode, you'd need to reinstall the system software. You can download the latest PS4 firmware from the official PlayStation website onto a USB drive and install it on your console.

  1. Create a folder on your USB drive named "PS4" and a subfolder within it named "UPDATE."

  2. Download the PS4 update file from the PlayStation website and save it in the "UPDATE" folder. The file must be named "PS4UPDATE.PUP." https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps4/system-software/

  3. With your PS4 in Safe Mode, select "Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)" and follow the prompts to reinstall the firmware from the USB drive.

Conclusion

Factory resetting your PlayStation 4 can help address various issues and is also a critical step before selling your console. By following the steps outlined above, you can ensure a smooth and secure reset process. Remember to back up any important data before initiating the reset to prevent data loss.
